Tye Tribbett had just come off the stage from performing a medley of old and new hit songs at the 2022 Roots Picnic when ABC Audio caught up with the legendary gospel singer. From the exclusive “artist only” lounge situated a few hundred feet from one of the main stages, Tribbett delved into the makings of his forthcoming album, All Things New.
The 46-year-old Grammy winner says he worked on the new project during the 2020 shutdown and that he’s grateful to have had the time to refocus during quarantine.
“I’m so glad the pandemic hit,” he said. “Seriously … it had me center myself. It stripped me from systems, it stripped me from my normal, what I always did.” Tribbett says he wanted to get away from the things he did just “for the industry” and that he’s excited to get back to his music-making roots.
“I’m just going back to enjoying creating, not to get on radio, not to get on TV, not to go viral, just my expression. So I’m excited.”
Because of that realization, Tribbett says listeners will get “a little bit of every version of Tye” on All Things New.
When asked how the album came to be, he says he meditated and prayed on a focus for 2020.
“I just heard God just say, ‘Hey, all things new, all things new,'” he said. And born was his latest single, “New,” which dropped on June 3 and will show up on the forthcoming album, expected July 8.
Because of help from some of his industry friends featured on the album — like PJ Morton, Jekalyn Carr and Zacardi Cortez, “if you don’t like one song, just go to the next. It’s going to be something on there that you’ll play forever,” Tribbett said.
