When Sheryl Lee Ralph won her first Emmy on September 12 for her role in Abbott Elementary, Kid Cudi was among the many stars sending her flowers.
The rapper/actor says her award was an indication of progress in Hollywood for Black actors.
“I was so inspired, and to see Black women achieve things of this caliber in a world where we are often very overlooked — it lets me know that times are changing, and we’re starting to see a turn in things,” Cudi told Billboard.
“Someone like Sheryl Lee Ralph can get her flowers and she’s been a legend all these years,” Cudi continued. “When I see her on something, I be feeling like that’s my mom. When I saw her win, I felt like that was my family member winning.”
The 38-year-old entertainer also sent flowers to Abbott Elementary star and creator Quinta Brunson, who won an Emmy for Outstanding Writing For A Comedy Series.
Cudi knows Brunson and says they support each other.
“She checks in on me and I check in on her,” the rapper says. “I’m really proud of her and Sheryl and what they’ve done. That’s my dream. I hope the shows I create end up having that big of an impact. I think she’s a f*****g genius and it’s incredible to watch her shine.”
Cudi’s new Netflix TV show and album, both titled Entergalactic, will be available on September 30. Entergalactic is the Cleveland MC’s 10th studio album, following Man on the Moon III: The Chosen in 2020.
Cudi serves as executive producer of the TV show with Black-ish creator Kenya Barris. He also provides one of the voices, along withTy Dolla $ign and Teyana Taylor.
