Actor J. Alphonse Nicholson of the hit Starz series P-Valley married his longtime girlfriend, Nafeesha, in a lavish wedding ceremony in Los Angeles on October 7.
In an exclusive Essence spread, the rising star opened up about their relationship, starting with their meeting in 2016.
“We just hung out and had a great time and just fell more and more in love with each other,” Nicholson said.
While COVID halted the couple’s wedding plans, Nicholson says when it was possible to finally make the walk down the aisle, he couldn’t wait any longer.
“We spent some quality time with our children and towards the end of the pandemic, I told her, I said, ‘Listen, I’m not trying to wait. We got to have this wedding, but I’m not trying to wait to have it,'” he said. “‘So can we just go down to this little spot, get married, go ahead and get my ring on my finger?’ She already had one. I wanted one on mine.”
After landing on a ceremony date, the pair were apart due to Nicholson’s filming of P-Valley in Atlanta. According to Essence, the separation made their bond stronger.
The wedding was as extravagant as it was star-studded.
The Chi star Miriam A. Hyman and Kindred actress Sheria Irving were among the special guests, as well as actor Lance Gross and his wife, Rebecca. Entertainment was provided by R&B singer Adrian Marcel.
Of their many plans for the future, Nicholson told Essence the most important is “for us just to continue to grow and love on each other.”
